Change all skills and traits that benefit the Ranger to also benefit the pet, no "sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't". Merged player and pet health pool, with cleave and AoE only able to hit one or the other, not both.
Basically, the Ranger class looks very similar to traditional Hunter/Pet class archetypes, but pets are severely squishy when compared to other games. This frustrates a group of players who are accustomed to a different playstyle than the Ranger offers.

The Ranger's balance takes pet damage output into account, so leaving a pet on passive (or stowing it) is gimping yourself pretty significantly. Better to have them run out there, get in a couple of hits, and then die, especially when you consider that most pets F2 skills are pretty lame anyway. 3.
bristleback is a ranged pet, meaning you can use him to not proc DH traps for example (though you should watch out for procing DH heal trap with smokescale too by f3ing). realy good combo is warhorn 5 then bristleback f2. it becomes unblockable, so oponents either waste dodges or eat dmg. Gazelle for cc in PvE.
