Ours (2010 2.0 TDI though) was a very good car, and I’d imagine the cost saving for the 1.6 would be worth it. The 2.0 was never exciting so not sure why we went for the bigger engine.

The key is it to get one post dieselgate but pre Euro 6d-ISC-FCM. So 2015 to 2020. The VW EA897 evo is great, got one in my car, but has two issues fixed with the evo2.

True, there are a few mechanical problems to look out for and there are other engines like it that can do an equally good job, but to answer the main question – is the 1.9 TDI a good engine – the answer is yes. For those seeking something that’s great for cost-efficient, dependable driving, this is one of the best for such a task.

It is not very good at accelerating from a low speed in 5th gear as the 1.9 but a lot better in the lower gears. My sister has a 2.0 Golf 6 speed and you are never in the right gear, its probably ok for motorways or straight roads where you can keep a constant speed but not so good on twisty country roads.
